As 2014 draws to a close it's nice to look back on the great moments of the year passing by to remember it for.  The start of 2014 was tough, being diagnosed with Anxiety and still getting over a serious relationship, I was genuinely at my lowest and most lonliest. With that in mind I decided to put every bit of energy that I had into my university studies and learning to be generally happy with what I had, I haven't looked back since. I'd like to share my most significant things from 2014 whether they're from this blog or not..Enjoy.

1. I Graduated from University
One of the biggest things to happen this year was my university experience came to an end, as I began the year with finishing the writing of my dissertation and by June I had completed my dance degree in Coventry. It is incredible how 3 years of your life come by and go so quickly. It still hasn't quite hit me that it's over and i'm a real grown up now with a blossoming career! I am so glad I made the most of my last 6 months living in my little house in Coventry and all of the great nights out with friends. I wrote about university on this blog.

2. Growing Professionally
I cannot believe how lucky I have been in terms of growing professionally in 2014, in particularly since leaving university. I still find that I have to pinch and remind myself of how lucky and blessed I have been this year. I have worked with really great people and been given some frightening and challenging new opportunities. I waved goodbye to working with Foundation for Community Dance (now known as People Dancing) and Candoco Dance  Company, both of whom gave me a lot of opportunities to think differently and put myself out there for new things too!

3. Falling in love
At the start of the year I was at my lowest and most anxious, being in a relationship with somebody so toxic for so long finally took its toll and I genuinely never thought I could love somebody again.. how wrong was I. Jordan and I met back in September and we've been inseparable since. He's the most genuine, romantic, supportive and loving human being I have become to know. I'm so excited to share our last day of 2014 and the first day of 2015 together, I'm so lucky to have him. He will probably read this and call me soppy but I am so grateful to have him.

4. Friends and Family.
The best moments of 2014 have been spent surrounded by the people who support, nuture, respect and love me the most.. my friends and family. They've been by my side in the lowest and highest points of 2014. I've met some new friends year, some of who I have loved getting to know and then built on lasting friendships! I am incredingly proud of each and everyone of them, no matter how big or small of achievements they've made throughout 2014. I am beyond excited for everything that 2015 holds for us and the new memories about to be made.

5. Feeling happy!
The best moment from 2014 is that I genuinely feel happy. I feel happy and content with who I am, where i'm going and who I surround myself with. 2014 has taught me to put myself first, understand anxiety and how to get through the tough days that I still have. I have understood the importance of 'downtime' and not always saying YES to everything, especially when your overworking and becoming exshausted. I have learnt to appreciate the small things in life and enjoyed reading more than sitting on a computer.

I've also enjoyed creating this blog and the recognition it has in my professional and personal life, I know that 2015 I will be putting A LOT more time and effort into it, the content and it's design.

In 2015 I want to continue to be happy, to work hard and also appreciate every moment
I was over the moon to see I had a 'line a day' 5 year diary, I'm excited to look back on the years to come and all the things I experience.

What are your best moments of 2014?

Happy New Year Everyone, all the best for 2015!! :D

Dear Grandad.

Dear Grandad,

It's been a long 8 years since you passed away, 8 years since I last felt your whiskers on my cheek as I would when we said goodbye and the smell of cigarettes as you sat in your sat smoking (and hopefully without falling asleep and nearly setting it on fire). New Year is the time of year that we all look back on the year that has passed us by, the memories and the precious moments created slip away as we look ahead to a new year full of adventures and memories to be created. I don't think New Years will ever be the same for me since it’s the day that 8 years ago that you left this world.

The memory still at the forefront of my mind each year, hanging out with my younger cousin Molly and looking ahead to what a celebration and the prospect of a New Year beyond a night’s sleep. I still remember my dad dashing out around 3 with a word of just going to my grandmas and that he’ll be back shortly, little did I know you were slipping out of our hands. My dad tried so hard to help bring you back to us but it just didn’t work… I remember around 5-6pm when my mum came in in floods of tears announcing ‘he’s gone, grandad’s gone’.. my world collapsed and I remember words of ‘I just want to die’ escaping from my young mind as someone so important and so precious in my life passed away. I suddenly felt a void, a sense of being empty.

Growing up you were a significant person in my life who along with Grandma would play a huge part in a lot of my favourite childhood memories. You introduced me to the likes of Police Academy, The King and I and The Sound Of Music (of which is still my favourite) to name a few and the number of times we would watch those on VHS during our time spent together. The walks in the sunshine, the strawberry plants in your garden and the stupid amounts of Dandelion and Burdock that I would drink. However I do not have the memory of our last time spent together, the last conversation that we ever had.. that haunts me. I would have loved to have acknowledged that and kept it forever. There is a massive part of me which wishes that I had kept a diary during my childhood, to have something to read or turn to whenever I wanted to remember you. All I have is the precious moments stored in my memory, the little things I never want to lose.

I am 23 now with a dance degree, a career in dance and loving boyfriend and friends. I’m sure you always knew I could do it and it was your passing that made me want to work hard and achieve big things. I’m not alone in saying that whenever we lose someone special the things that hurt us most are the things that they will won't be around to experience. I wish you were here when I started university when I graduated, when I got all of my dance jobs because I know how proud you’d be. I still tell Grandma them all and I’m glad she’s here to experience them for you because you both are a massive part of my life. You would not believe how big our family has grown, it's incredible. I’m sure you would have loved the ones you did not have the chance to meet as much as the ones you did meet. We still talk about you, at moments and it’s comforting to know you’re still a part of their life as much as you are of me. We continue to tell the younger cousins about your personality and I am sure they would have loved you too.

I miss you so much.

Love you always,

your sam xx

My life has become very busy with Christmas around the corner especially with my bar job taking the majority of the spare time I have right now. Spending a considerable amount of time having a think on what I would like to blog about has been frustrating, whilst I have mentioned on a few occasions that this blog has become a 'personal journey' in it's every right but I am really trying to sit and write something interesting HONEST.

So I have decided to talk about my experience of being on the U.DANCE  COUNTY SELECTIONS the other week as part of my Young Associate Programmer for a dance organisation in Nottingham, especially that now the groups who have been chosen to represent their county have been informed of our decisions. So I spent 4 days watching A LOT of footage from young people, it's such a hard process. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to see what work was being created across the county in particularly through mainstream education. It isn't often that we are able to witness and fully appreciate the work created through those settings and the great work contributed by both dance artists AND the young people. It was just as much when we saw community groups working together to create great pieces of dance work, this is why platforms like U.DANCE are so important in existing.

I worked through application forms from Leicestershire and Rutland, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire as well as Birmingham. Birmingham's selection process was a lot different as the chosen applicants would go straight to the Regional Event MY Dance in April whilst the other 5 counties have their own county platform performances first.. CRIKEY!
I now have the task of programming the Fringe Festival events for MY Dance in April, I can't even begin to explain how terrified but excited I am! I'm totally up for the challenge just going to need A LOT of Tea and Cake in 2015!
I really enjoyed being able to contribute my own feedback towards decisions made and my own creative mind in discussing the possibilities in how a piece of dance could develop in the future (whether it's taken into note or not). It gives me a lot to think about in terms of how I would feedback work in the future and the effective ways of accomplishing this!

I look forward to 2015 and watching the selected groups perform live and see how their journey after application forms has developed!

I am very excited to continue writing about this journey as a Young Associate Programmer with Dance4.

Graduation.

Hello Everyone!

I've finally crawled from under my rock and wrote a blog post about a special day.

Monday 17th November was a pretty important date on my calendar of 2014 as I finally Graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from Coventry University (after 5 months since I actually left university in June!),  I'm not going to lie I was a bit apprehensive about returning to the city that I spent the last 3 years in and just being surrounded by some people that I hadn't seen in months. I can't even believe how quickly the day went, from arriving and getting the cap and gown on to the service itself! Walking up to get your degree, the commitment of three years in that one certificate. It didn't seem like 5 minutes and then the gown and cap was off then I returned to my hometown of Leicester. The gown was such a pain to wear, it kept falling off my shoulders and I nearly choked myself when I took a seat in the cathedral (typical)

It was such an incredible day and the icing on the cake of an incredible journey as much as it has been a brilliant 2014! :D It was lovely to be surrounded by my friends, in particular, my best friend Katie who I wouldn't have got through the whole journey without! It really was the special day that everyone I knew has graduated already spoke about, I wish I kept the gown for longer and had more pictures to capture of the day.

I know university isn't the experience for everyone, it does demand a lot of you for quite a considerable amount of time and sometimes you have the new experience of throwing yourself out there and living away from home. But I believe it's an experience you should give a go, even if a few months or years down the line you find it's not for you and decide to try different avenues to accomplish your career. I dropped out of university within my first week, the whole idea FREAKED me out but with a bit of time to breathe and talk myself round I went back and didn't look back, I got my degree! It feels amazing to finally have it in writing and to have had the experience I so longed when I left college and knew university was where I wanted to go to my next step.

I really hope you enjoy looking at my pictures from the day, they're always nice to look back on in years to come.
